Kinda early in the game, some spoilers to follow:

So I'm in Megaton, trying to decide what I'm going to do with the big nuke plopped down in the middle of town.  I had already decided to try and go as good as possible.  I had forgotten you could use Mentats to buff up your skill to disarm.  I was gonna head out of town on another quest and I saw the sheriff dude, and he had new dialogue trees.  Long story short, I tattled on the guy in the bar that wants to blow the whole town up.  We roll up in the bar so he can arrest the dude, and he fucking caps the sheriff and tells me I'm gonna regret this later.  I'm still able to disarm the bomb though, and now the sheriffs kid gives out the rewards.  Got a free house out of the deal, which is just one more thing I don't have enough caps for.  So much shit to do in this game its insane.

Hah I did the same thing. I ended up just leaving for the letter delivery mission without disarming it though.

Good news is, I have a sweet new hat from the sheriff's corpse.

im a ways past megaton now, and my only gripe so far is that there's so much to do, and not enough ammo and food to support the amount of exploration you want to do :(

I've redone the Vault a couple times now.  I think I'm going to redo it again. I should probably explore the rest of the game sometime, but I want to see how the different archtypes handle.  I'm going to try out super-charismatic tonight.

Oh, and V.A.T.S is fucking awesome.  I shot some guy's leg off with a pistol.

Shooting people in the face, and watching their heads fly off in slow motion is probably the best part about this game.

So I found the town with a shitload of ants, went through the subway and did that whole thing.  Got kinda dicey at the end, ended up running so low on ammo I was killing them with frag grenades / frag mines.  I got it done, but I think I might have kinda fucked myself.  I was able to do it all, but none of the ants drop ammo.  I probably should have farmed raiders first.  Anyway, off to the radio station if I can make it.

the ant town is what i was talking about burgle, im going to go back and kill some raiders after work today to see if i can restock on ammo. i've bought out every shop i can find and im still low :(

Finally made it to the radio station.  Cleared a ton of ghouls and stuff in the subway to get there, really good $$ and some decent ammo drops.  Following the Brotherhood is pretty fucking awesome, and killing the Behemoth thing is pretty sweet.  Finally got a shotgun, ton of hunting rifles, and a nuke launcher.  I am now swimming in ammo, and I have some Power Armor.  Now I just need to figure out how to train in it so I can wear the shit.

Is this game really good? I'm currently in the 10th chapter of dead space, hopefully it ends soon, was going to install farcry 2 after it but going by this thread I think I'll install fallout. (usenet is the best thing ever.)

Man this game is fun as hell, I have no idea what I'm doing, and I'm still in Megaton, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

I've been putting in a good 6-8+ hours a day on this game and I can't fucking stop. I fully endorse this monster.

I've got this masochistic tendency to play games on hard mode my first go-through. That said, this game is still fucking awesome. Chewing through rich people in Tenpenny tower with a minigun is ridiculously fun.

I spend far too much time slaughtering towns  :) The cannibalism perk is sounding very tempting.

Pro tip, don't rush the main quest. I did because when you figure out what your ultimate goal is, it seems like something you want to get done ASAP before tackling the rest of the game. Instead, at the end you have to make a choice and no matter which you choose, the game ends. Not having a save from before the final segment of the game = I'm on my second play through.

i get bored that the "right way" is not readily obvious, and i've been doing alllll of the side quests, whether i like it or not.

Yeah this is disappointing, since Fallout 2 let you keep playing after you beat it.

I have a save from right before the balls out end mission though, for future dicking around at max level.

The sames true with oblivion so I don't know why they changed that with fallout. I guess as long as you know not to do the last mission its not so bad but it would be nice if you could keep going on.

Playing it nice the first time through, I'll probably try Hannibal Lectering it up on Very Hard next time :x

Anyone had issues with it just randomly crashing on you? I've had it dump out a while after saving and it was fucking annoying.

Yeah I've had that happen a few times, and also on the injured animation ie: when your vision fucks up from a head injury.

Also, does anyone know how to train power armor? Killed one of the outcasts a bit back, and can't wear his stuff.

There is one NPC that I can't talk to without crashing... and I crashed the one time that I died (hopefully I can just avoid dying in the future)

Other than that, I'm having a pretty fun time with it. A pretty good title to pirate.

Pretty sure Power Armor training is given to you during the main quest, haven't gotten that far in yet to find it though

kind of a spoiler, more of a bug/glitch warning:

When you are wrapping up the quest "Big Trouble in Big Town", it can fuck up before the last step sometimes.  Once you've got the 2 people from the police HQ back to Big Town, Red talks about defending the area from super mutants.  One of the options, depending  on your stats etc, is to show them how to build robots to defend the town.  They'll all walk over to a big pile of junk and wait for you to build it.  Problem is, they usually wont spawn.  2 fixes, first is to just choose the option to help them fight.  Its only 4 regular super mutants and they run down the bridge in pairs pretty spaced out.  Other option for PC only, is to go into the console and spawn the 2 robot models you need.  I didnt write down the commands since im playing on 360, but it should be easy to look up if you want to go that route.  Its really easier to just fight the 4 super mutants and be on your way though, very simple fight at that point in the game.

Side note, when you are killing the guys in the police station to get to the captives, dont use shit like frags or missles.  If the captives take any splash damage, they aggro on you and it will fuck it up if you dont want them to die.

Went and looked it up to double check I hadn't skipped it.  Power Armor training is at the Brotherhood of Steel Citadel, where the Pentagon used to be.  Didnt see an SS with it on the map, but I'll assume its on the east side of the map near all the other landmarks / fed buildings.

I had max small guns, and reloaded a save game to pick the option for teaching them how to shoot.

Also (spoiler!) yeah power armor training is part of the main quest, and right before the last mission they give you your own set to wear if for some reason you never looted it.

Good, self sacrificing ending is ho-hum :(

I'd give it an 85-90%.
-Some bugs (graphical and gameplay-wise).
-I hate the inventory/repair system (so much micromanaging)
-Models and fights become stagnant.
-There is so much mindless shit to kill.
-Most plot elements are predictable/unsurprising.
-Did I mention that there is so much shit to kill.

I prefer to think of this game as a less shitty Hellgate.

I have endless fun killing things in fallout. The VATS slow motion effect is cool and if you don't want to use vats you can just fps it up. the plot is kinda bland if you're good but I haven't tried being evil yet to see how things play out. A couple more models of enemys would be nice like you said binks but over all everything works well together. I really would only tell people not to buy this game if they hate RPGS.

Anyone try the game on very hard?  I want to know if it's insane or just sufficiently challenging.  Hard was difficult at times, but I still managed to finish the game with enough ammo and stimpacks to annex Canada.

List of people you can't kill:
Any child
Your Father
Jonas
Amata
Sentinel Lyons
Brotherhood of Steel Paladin (inside GNR)
Pinkerton
Daniel Littlehorn

Playing the game as evil makes even "Very Hard" stupidly easy.  Kill off a traveling merchants and looting their cows is laughably profitable.

Few spoilers.

The ending is pretty disappointing, I was expecting something far more epic than that. I also made the mistake of following the main quest line and ended up finishing the game too early. There are sooo many things you can do though its crazy. I have a couple of places left to discover to turn in at the ranger camp but not much anymore. I went super good and got the title Last, Best hope of humanity.

I would give it an 80+. It plays well but I also got some random crashes and at one point I would crash whenever getting close to the Jefferson memorial, it has something to do with the order of doing the broken ship bow, the android quest, and scientific pursuits. So i had to reload a much older saved game and I got pretty pissed.

The ending blows big time.

You can spend a fuck ton of time playing this game just wandering off and doing side quests/exploring/killing.
Vault 106 was fucking crazy, if you open your map, the pipboy keeps changing the map and where the exit is, I was going nuts when playing through this. That's the sort of shit that makes the game cool. I want to do it over again as evil and try stuff out like the Mesmetron to round up slaves. Just so many things to do..
