General Discussion / Home Theater/Appliance info for Best Buy job?
« on: June 08, 2010, 10:15:06 AM »
I have a job interview on Monday at Best Buy for either the Home Theater or Appliance section and I've never worked in these areas before, so I'm gathering a list of research topics so I have at least some knowledge going in.

Some things that I already know to look up for Home Theater are surround sound, LCD vs plasma, screen resolution, interlaced vs progressive, DVD vs Blu-ray, projection tvs, and connecting everything together.

For Appliances, all I can think of is the basic function of each machine and maybe the program that some of the new refrigerators come with.

Is there anything else for either category or just in general I should know for my interview?

Humor / Japanese elude criminals by dressing as vending machine

Deftly, Ms. Tsukioka, a 29-year-old experimental fashion designer, lifted a flap on her skirt to reveal a large sheet of cloth printed in bright red with a soft drink logo partly visible. By holding the sheet open and stepping to the side of the road, she showed how a woman walking alone could elude pursuers — by disguising herself as a vending machine.

General Discussion / I'm getting flabby
« on: May 23, 2010, 01:48:22 AM »
I've been around 135 lbs. for the past 8 years and no matter what I ate, I couldn't gain weight. Now that those days are over, I've gained about 15 lbs. in the past 3 months, mostly around my waist. I've never really "exercised" and I could use some pointers, like how often I should work out, when to rest, what to eat, etc.

My main goal is to work on my (nonexistant) abs and arms. For the past week I've been doing 10 sit ups and 10 push ups during commercial breaks, averaging around 100 of each a day, but like I said, I don't know exactly what a good number is and how many days I should rest per week.

Humor / Shanghai's older residents turn to drugs for mahjong marathons

In a city once synonymous with decadence, a new drug menace has emerged in Shanghai. Recreational users are bingeing on ketamine, cocaine and methamphetamine to keep them playing into the early hours.

This time it is not the young and reckless fuelling late-night tours of nightclubs. Instead, says a state newspaper, retired and middle-aged residents are turning to drugs to stay awake through marathon sessions of mahjong.

Zheng Yuqing, spokesman for the Shanghai anti-drug commission, warned of a "significant increase" in cases among 40- to 60-year-olds. "The drug-taking mostly occurs among groups in card rooms, a place popular among the elderly where they can get together and play cards. The addicts are often friends who have known each other for years," he told China Daily.

The newspaper said many took cocaine and other stimulants during card-playing and mahjong sessions that often lasted all night. The games frequently involve gambling, which is illegal on the mainland.

"Most of the older victims are unemployed or retired and so have plenty of spare time. They are often not well-educated and have little awareness of the harm caused by taking drugs," Zheng added.

While most users are teenagers or youthful professionals, the proportion of drug addicts who are under 35 has declined from 77% nationwide in 2001 to just under 60% last year, the paper reported.

"More and more middle-aged and older people take drugs because they feel lonely and empty after retiring or losing their jobs," said Li Luyan, secretary-general of Shanghai Sports Association for the Aged. "Their children and society in general should show more care to these people to keep them away from drugs … they need more activities, such as sports, to fill their spare time."

Drug abuse among mahjong players will be disappointing to sports officials, who have tried to clean up the game's image in recent years. They even asked for advice from enthusiasts in the United States, where the game is popular with middle-class women.

"Initially the game was played in opium dens," pointed out Ruth Unger, president of the New York-based National Mah Jongg League and one of those who advised Chinese officials. "[More recently] there was a complete turnaround and they were trying to promote 'healthy mahjong'."

Unger said the game itself was addictive, which helps to explain why it can tax the health of even youthful participants.

Last year a 30-year-old man in Guizhou province slipped into a coma after playing for 32 hours non-stop, state media reported.

Gaming / SC2 Beta Operational

The StarCraft II beta went live today with 20,000 invites in the first wave. If anyone managed to snag one and doesn't plan on using it, I'd be willing to trade quite a bit of gold for it. I think my account officially goes offline in March though, so the trade would have to be fairly soon.

Gaming / Wii: Epic Mickey
« on: November 07, 2009, 05:36:00 PM »
A new Disney game for the Wii (lol) that stars Mickey using a paintbrush as his main weapon (lol). However, this game has a very dark art style with some horror and steampunk mixed together with the Disney characters we all know, and some that were before most our times. I'm thinking about trying it and if it's as good as some screens look, I'll have to give it a go.

This game is kinda like an RTS. You send your flowerseed fighter jets to other asteroids to fight the different Flower Empires. For 10 seeds you can build a plant that will spawn more seeds for your flower army, or a defensive plant that spawns bomb seeds. This indie game was released just a few days ago and is a little rough around the edges (like on Demo level 5 you have to build 2 defensive plants or it won't give you the victory screen), but they're updating it.

It's like Breakout! where you destroy blocks, but this one adds an adventure mode. You have to create a user name and password so it can save your game, but you don't have to fill in the email info. The website only gives you 3 moves per day, so if anyone can find a full unlimited version, I'd love you forever.

Simple "game" you can have running in the background while at work and you can check on your creation from time to time.

Walls block stuff.
Water makes Plants grow, puts out fires.
Plants and Oil go up in flames.
Cera is like a fuse, burns quickly while burning up and slowly sideways.
Not really sure what salt does.
The ??? is pretty much a mass erase.

The big ball at the bottom grows with water, shrinks with salt. I guess the goal is to try to find fun ways to dissipate the fuzzy? I just like drawing penises and setting them on fire.
